AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A 1978 limited edition color print by Louisiana wildlife artist Murrell Butler titled Young Bobwhites with Indian Verbena, presented under glass in a custom natural walnut frame measuring 17 1/2" wide by 14 1/2" tall overall. The molded solid wood frame measures approximately 2" wide. The lower center margin bears the printed title Young Bobwhites with Indian Verbena ~ Limited Edition. The lower right bears Butler’s printed block signature and copyright date MURRELL BUTLER ~ © 1978, followed beneath by the artist’s hand written pencil signature Murrell Butler and limited edition number 212/1000. The composition depicts three young Northern bobwhite quail gathered beneath tall flowering Indian verbena, rendered in muted rose, violet, blue gray, and earth tones against an open cream background. Attached across the reverse is an extensive period biographical sheet titled A Biographical Sketch of the Artist, written by Dr. Ernest P. Edwards, Professor of Biology at Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia. The illustrated sheet discusses Butler’s development as a wildlife artist and naturalist, field observation, painting methods, ornithological work, and participation in conservation organizations. Edward Murrell Butler, 1937–2021, was a lifelong resident of St. Francisville, Louisiana, recognized as an artist, naturalist, and preservationist. Birds remained among his best known subjects, alongside Louisiana landscapes, swamp scenes, butterflies, and other native wildlife.
