Title: Mediterranean Landscape with Flowering Tree and Distant Sea Technique: Watercolor on paper Measures: 11.5 x 8 inches (29.2 x 20.3 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with bright coloration and a visibly textured, layered paint surface with raised strokes in the foliage and foreground. A small pale mark is visible on the large tree trunk at lower left. No significant tears, losses, or creases are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a gold-toned frame with a mottled, distressed finish and an incised hatch-mark pattern, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Private Colelction Visual Description: A sunny landscape in vertical format, viewed from a shaded path beneath a large tree toward a sloping hillside and a band of distant sea. The tree dominates the left side of the composition, its trunk and branches painted in violet, mauve, pink, and slate blue with dark outlines, and its crown made up of loose dabs of green, olive, rose, cobalt, and gold that spread across the upper left. Beyond it, a sequence of slender trees with rounded canopies in emerald, turquoise, lime, and yellow-green stands in the middle ground, set against simplified angular planes in ochre, cream, salmon, sky blue, and terracotta that suggest rooftops, fields, or hillside terraces. A strip of deep blue water runs along the horizon beneath a pale sky of cerulean, lemon, and white. At right, a smaller tree with a violet trunk rises from a grassy bank. The foreground is a warm path rendered in short, broken strokes of orange, ochre, cream, and green. The vivid, non-naturalistic color, the dark contours, and the flattened, decorative treatment of space reflect the visual language of Fauvism and early twentieth-century Mediterranean landscape painting. The lower right bears a painted inscription reading "Matisse." This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
