Title: Lovers Beneath a Flowering Tree with Birds and a Goat Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 32 x 24 inches (81.3 x 61.0 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with soft, harmonious coloration and lively, textured brushwork in short dabs and curling strokes throughout. No significant paint losses or tears are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Provenance: Private Colelction Visual Description: A lyrical, dreamlike composition in vertical format, dominated by a slender tree whose green, speckled trunk rises through the center and dissolves into a vast canopy of blossoms. The upper two-thirds of the canvas is filled with an allover pattern of roses and small flowers in coral, rose pink, crimson, violet, lemon yellow, and pale blue, scattered with dark calligraphic loops and dashes. Within this floral cloud, a yellow bird with outstretched wings descends at left and a rose-red bird flies at right, while a golden crescent moon floats among the flowers. At lower left, a pair of lovers embrace: a dark-haired man in profile leans over a woman with a pale yellow face, her body wrapped in a soft blue and pink patterned garment that sweeps diagonally across the lower half of the canvas. Behind them, a small blue house and a pointed steeple sit on a green hillside, and at right a pale goat with golden flanks leaps above a flowered bank, near a small figure in a dark hat. The left edge fades into a misty blue and violet sky. The floating figures, folkloric animals, village architecture, and intensely poetic color reflect the visual language of twentieth-century modernist fantasy painting. The lower left bears a painted inscription reading "Chagall," followed by additional painted characters.
