Title: Surreal Landscape with Elongated Head, Butterflies, and Beaded Form Technique: Watercolor on paper Measures: 10 x 8 inches (25.4 x 20.3 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with clear, fresh coloration in both the washes and the more opaque detailed passages, and crisp ink linework. The paper shows soft tide lines and variations of tone within the washes, along with minor surface irregularities. No significant tears, losses, or creases are apparent in the available images. Light handling marks and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a black frame with a rounded profile and a gilt beaded inner molding, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Provenance: Private Colelction Visual Description: A dreamlike landscape in vertical format, set on a broad ochre and tan plain that stretches beneath a pale blue sky streaked with soft white and a band of darker cobalt cloud. Floating across the upper half of the sheet is a strange, elongated head in tan and sienna: a heavy-lidded face with a spiraling eye and a long, drooping, nose-like extension that stretches to the left and bends downward, propped on thin red crutch-like lines that descend to the ground. A drip of red falls from beneath the chin. Around the head and down the right side of the composition, dozens of small butterflies in yellow, orange, red, green, white, and blue flutter in a loose column. In the lower right, a tall beaded form, built from rings of sky-blue dots enclosing two oval fields of golden yellow dots, rises from the ground like a jeweled figure. At upper left, a molecular cluster of teal, red, and yellow spheres hovers in the sky, and on the far horizon a small solitary figure casts a long shadow beside a low strip of green hills. The irrational combinations, the crutch-supported soft form, and the deep, empty plain reflect the visual language of Surrealism. The lower right bears an inscription reading "Dalí" with the date "1957" beneath. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
