Survey Photos Rainy Lake Lot 3-Pc. This extraordinary lot of three original late 19th-century scientific survey photographs was taken by renowned Scottish-Canadian geologist Andrew Cowper Lawson for his landmark Geological Survey of Canada study, Report on the Geology of the Rainy Lake Region (published 1887–1888). Captured along the Ontario–Minnesota border, these photographs document notable geological formations including prominent outcrops of contorted gneiss with visible structural rock folding and Jasper Breccia. Each albumen photograph measures approximately 4.5 x 7.5 inches and comes securely mounted to its original heavy cardstock mount measuring roughly 7.5 x 9.5 inches, featuring original survey catalog index numbers (such as #53106) and extensive period handwritten pencil annotations and plate notations along the lower margins. Photographed by Andrew Cowper Lawson for the Geological Survey of Canada, c. 1887–1888, albumen prints on cardstock mounts, signed/annotated in pencil on lower borders, image sizes approx. 4.5 x 7.5 inches (mounts approx. 7.5 x 9.5 inches). Shows expected signs of age including light surface toning, minor foxing/spotting, faint corner and edge wear to the card mounts, and subtle pencil marks from archival publication layout, though all three photographic images retain remarkable sharpness, rich tone, and clear contrast; no major tears, creases, or plate bends observed. See photos for close-up details.
