AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A vintage Williamsburg Pottery S-180 clay Tavern Pipe, measuring around 16" long, retained in the original illustrated cardboard box measuring 18" long. The long white clay pipe was made by Williamsburg Pottery of Lightfoot, Virginia as a reproduction of the type of tavern pipe widely used during the mid-18th century colonial period. The original box specifically identifies this as the Tavern Pipe, model S-180, and notes that clay pipe fragments were extensively unearthed during the archaeological restoration of Williamsburg, where bowl and stem forms helped archaeologists date historic sites. Long-stemmed clay pipes of this type were inexpensive everyday smoking implements during the colonial era. Their fragile stems were frequently broken during use, which is one reason surviving archaeological sites often yield large numbers of pipe fragments rather than intact examples. Comparable Williamsburg Pottery S-180 examples are documented at around 16" long, with the form specifically described as based upon archaeological finds from the restoration of Williamsburg. Williamsburg Pottery operated in Lightfoot, Virginia, near Colonial Williamsburg, and produced a wide range of historically inspired pottery and souvenir wares. These Tavern Pipes were marketed as educational and decorative reproductions connecting visitors with colonial Virginia material culture. Surviving boxed examples are documented with the same S-180 model designation, Williamsburg Pottery attribution, and long clay form seen here. The original box carries period-style graphics depicting the long clay pipe together with the wording FOR THE BEST VIRGINIA WEED, reinforcing the colonial tavern presentation. CONDITION REPORT > Pipe appears well preserved, retained within the original fitted cardboard insert.
