AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A large vintage glass counter jar with original-style Tom’s Toasted Peanuts advertising labels affixed to the glass, including the familiar red triangular Tom’s Toasted Peanuts 5¢ logo and rectangular Eat Tom’s Toasted Peanuts label. The graphics are applied labels rather than hard fired graphics. With the lid in place, the jar stands 11" tall, measures 5" x 5" overall with rounded corners, and weighs close to 4 lbs. The heavy clear glass shows numerous trapped air bubbles and other manufacturing irregularities associated with older glass production. The fitted lid has a substantial domed form with a scalloped, fluted crown like knob. Tom’s traces back to 1925, when inventor John Thomas “Tom” Huston founded the Tom Huston Peanut Company in Columbus, Georgia. Huston helped popularize nationally distributed single-serving roasted peanuts, and by 1926 he had patented the narrow glassine package that carried the company’s distinctive red triangular Tom’s Toasted Peanuts logo. The company grew rapidly during the late 1920s, with Tom’s becoming a major Southern snack-food brand. George Washington Carver also served as an unpaid consultant to the company during the early years, advising on peanut growing and processing. The 5¢ advertising on this jar reflects the era when Tom’s toasted peanuts were sold as inexpensive individual snacks through stores, counters and route distributors. The company’s red triangle became one of the most recognizable elements of Tom’s branding and remained closely tied to the peanut business for decades. CONDITION REPORT > Slight chip to the retainer ring at the underside of the domed lid.
