The VHS tapes are GoodTimes Home Video releases featuring the acclaimed animated adaptations produced from Beatrix Potter’s original stories and artwork. The series was created in the 1990s in association with Frederick Warne & Co., the BBC, TVC London, Fuji Television Network and Pony Canyon, with animation intentionally styled to remain close to Potter’s original watercolor illustrations. The productions also incorporated live-action sequences featuring actress Niamh Cusack as Beatrix Potter. Included VHS titles are: The Tale of Two Bad Mice & Johnny Town-Mouse ~ VHS 05-77187 The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny ~ VHS 77071 The Tale of Samuel Whiskers or The Roly-Poly Pudding ~ VHS 77073 The Tale of Tom Kitten and Jemima Puddle-Duck ~ VHS 77075 The Tale of Pigling Bland ~ VHS 77079 The Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny release is documented as a 1993 GoodTimes VHS, while the corresponding animated production dates to the early 1990s series. The Tom Kitten and Jemima Puddle-Duck issue is likewise documented under GoodTimes catalog number 77075. Also included are two large-format authorized hardcover editions: The Tale of Peter Rabbit The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck These cream-colored hardcover editions with floral vine borders reproduce Potter’s original-style illustrations and were issued as authorized editions under license from Frederick Warne & Co. Comparable examples of this exact cover series date to the early 1990s, including Derrydale Books editions produced through arrangements involving Ottenheimer Publishers and Frederick Warne. Beatrix Potter, 1866–1943, was an English author, illustrator and naturalist whose fascination with animals and the countryside developed during childhood holidays in Scotland and the Lake District. Peter Rabbit originated in an illustrated letter Potter wrote in 1893 to Noel Moore, the young son of her former governess. After publishers initially rejected the story, Potter privately printed it before Frederick Warne & Co. commercially published The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902. The book became an immediate success and developed into one of the most enduring works of children’s literature. Potter ultimately created a celebrated group of interconnected animal characters whose adventures were frequently inspired by real animals, landscapes and events around Hill Top Farm in England’s Lake District, which she purchased in 1905. Jemima Puddle-Duck was based on an actual duck associated with Hill Top, while the surroundings of the farm inspired several later stories including Samuel Whiskers and Tom Kitten.
