AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > An impressively substantial ceramic jardinière/cachepot measuring 13.5" x 11.5" overall, not including the handles, which extend 2.5" at either end, standing 8.25" tall, and weighing an impressive 13 lbs. Represented as French majolica/barbotine, the planter is richly modeled in high relief with three white rabbits set among dense ferns, layered foliage, grasses and red berries against a turquoise-blue glazed body. Deeply sculpted brown faux-bois branchwork forms the irregular upper rim and lower border, while large curved branch-form handles extend from either end. The relief decoration continues around the body, giving the piece a highly dimensional and sculptural appearance from every viewing angle. Majolica refers to brightly glazed earthenware characterized by vivid color, molded relief and naturalistic decoration, frequently incorporating animals, flowers, foliage, fruit and faux-bois elements. Barbotine is commonly associated with French relief-decorated ceramics using similarly sculptural and richly glazed naturalistic subjects. The design strongly reflects the broader Victorian naturalistic majolica tradition associated with Minton, George Jones and the Staffordshire potteries of England, particularly through the turquoise ground, relief-modeled animals, dense botanical decoration, faux-bois branchwork and sculptural garden form. These highly decorative forms were also interpreted by French ceramic makers, making the piece visually relevant to collectors of French barbotine, English majolica, Staffordshire, Minton and George Jones-style wares. The unusual rabbit subject, deeply molded decoration, strong contrasting glazes, substantial proportions and impressive 13 lb weight give this jardinière considerable visual presence as a planter, cachepot or decorative centerpiece. CONDITION REPORT > Settled dirt to the interior ~ Otherwise a well preserved example ~ Perhaps typical and minor elements relative to age, a degree of use and material.
