AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A substantial cast iron Crescent salesman sample cook stove, standing 6.5" tall to the stovetop with an additional 4" of height to the stovepipe support, measuring 11" wide including the removable end shelf x 6" deep, and weighing an impressive 8 lbs. Designed in the manner of a full-size period kitchen range and features the Crescent name with crescent moon and star emblem cast into the front oven door. Details include four removable stovetop eyes, all present, an ornate pierced cast iron back with warming platforms, stovepipe collar and support, removable pierced end shelf, opening oven and side access doors, decorative cabriole-style legs, and extensive molded cast iron ornamentation. A nickel-silver plated lift handle for removing the stovetop eyes is included. Crescent Stove Works of Evansville, Indiana was organized in 1905 and manufactured the Crescent line of stoves and ranges. Period advertising promoted Crescent stoves and ranges as strongly built household appliances, and contemporary Evansville industrial histories specifically identify Crescent Stove Works as the manufacturer of the Crescent line. The company operated until the 1930s, with the assets purchased by William R. Bootz in 1937. A salesman sample was a reduced-scale working representation carried or displayed by company representatives to demonstrate the construction, appearance and operating features of a full-size product to prospective dealers or customers. Rather than transporting an extremely heavy household range, the salesman could show details such as removable burner plates, opening doors, shelves, firebox arrangements and decorative casting in miniature. A Crescent cast iron example cataloged by the Broomfield History Collections is specifically identified as a salesman’s sample and retains many of the same features seen here, including movable or removable doors and burner plates and a burner-lifting handle. The combination of the Crescent branding, elaborate cast construction, four complete stovetop eyes, removable shelf, opening components, stovepipe assembly and original-style lift handle gives this example strong appeal as an early American stove advertising and merchandising collectible. CONDITION REPORT > Perhaps typical and minor elements relative to age and materials ~ Overall, a well preserved example.
