AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > An early 1875 edition of One Summer by Blanche Willis Howard, published in Boston by James R. Osgood & Co., measuring 4.25" x 6" and containing 254 pages. The book is bound in deep blue embossed cloth-covered boards with decorative blind-stamped borders and gold gilt impressed title and publisher lettering to the front cover and spine. The copyright page is dated 1875, with printing credited to the University Press, Welch, Bigelow & Co., Cambridge. One Summer was the first novel of Blanche Willis Howard (1847–1898), an American author born in Bangor, Maine, who later lived extensively in Europe. The novel became a notable popular success in both the United States and England and established Howard’s literary reputation. Contemporary and later bibliographic listings identify James R. Osgood & Co., Boston, 1875 as the first-edition publisher. James R. Osgood & Co. was one of the significant Boston literary publishing houses of the period and succeeded the celebrated Ticknor & Fields publishing tradition, issuing works by many prominent 19th-century American authors. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered. Binding exhibits substantial age and use, including pronounced wear and losses at the spine ends and corners, rubbing to the cloth and areas of surface loss. Interior remains substantially intact with expected toning, scattered spotting and handling consistent with a book approaching 150 years of age.
