AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A custom framed portrait of General Robert E. Lee, presented in a 10" × 12" wood frame finished in gold gilt, with double matting surrounding a 3.25" × 5.25" sight. The image depicts Lee in Confederate general’s uniform and is identified on the reverse paper label as Gen. Robert E. Lee by John A. Elder. The portrait is housed beneath non-glare glass, the type commonly used in better custom framing to reduce reflections and improve viewing. The overall presentation is substantially constructed for the relatively small size and weighs an impressive 1.75 lbs. The surprising weight is likely explained by the combined construction rather than the lithograph itself: solid wood frame molding, two layers of mat board, glass, backing board and framing hardware can add considerable weight even to a 10" × 12" presentation. Older non-glare glass can also be comparatively substantial. The weight and finished reverse are consistent with a piece that was professionally custom framed rather than placed in a lightweight ready-made frame. The reverse label provides a short historical tribute to Lee and identifies John A. Elder, a Virginia artist especially remembered for portraits and Civil War subjects. Elder was closely associated with Confederate military portraiture and produced a number of images of prominent Southern figures during and after the war. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered.
