AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A substantial Victorian E & C Challinor Portland pattern pedestal bowl, standing 6" tall, measuring 9.75" in diameter to the top rim, not including the extended handles, and weighing 2.75 lbs. The underside carries the printed PORTLAND ~ E & C CHALLINOR pattern mark. Edward & Charles Challinor operated at the Fenton Potteries in Stoke-on-Trent from 1862 to 1891, producing ironstone, earthenware and transfer-printed wares for domestic and export markets. The Portland pattern is documented among the firm’s named designs. The broad flared bowl is raised on a circular pedestal foot and fitted with opposing molded loop handles. Decoration is executed in a soft flow blue to lavender-blue transfer over a white earthenware or ironstone body, with classical urns, amphora forms, architectural elements and ornamental vessels arranged around the exterior. The interior carries a central grouping of classical vessels, surrounded by a wide repeating floral and foliate border beneath the rim. Coordinating decoration continues around the foot, producing a fully developed Victorian transferware presentation. The combination of substantial scale, pedestal construction, opposing handles and elaborate transfer decoration is consistent with use as a center bowl, fruit bowl or decorative table centerpiece. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered ~ A notably well preserved example, considering the age ~ Minor hairline, darkened, around 1.5" vertical from outside rim to shoulder, noted on focused scrutiny.
