AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A vintage Weller Pottery Dogwood ewer or pitcher standing 7" tall and measuring 6" in diameter to the body, formed with a rounded bulbous body, tall pinched pouring spout and sweeping loop handle. The pottery is finished in a soft matte celadon to blue-green glaze, decorated across the front with a large raised white dogwood blossom having a pale blue center and ochre-gold stamens. Molded green leaves and dark branching stems extend around the flower, creating the naturalistic floral treatment associated with Weller’s later decorative pottery. Comparable Dogwood examples of this same ewer form are identified at 7" tall with a 6" body diameter. Underside carries the large molded script factory mark Weller Pottery ~ Since 1872. This mark and the molded floral production are associated with Weller’s later period, generally dating the Dogwood wares to the 1930s through 1940s, before the pottery ceased production in 1948. Samuel Weller established the pottery in Ohio during the 1870s, and the company grew into one of the most important American art-pottery manufacturers centered around Zanesville. By the 1930s, Weller increasingly relied upon molded decoration, producing floral lines such as Dogwood with dimensional blossoms, leaves and softly colored matte glazes. The tall spout, broad body and sculptural handle give the piece considerable presence as a decorative pitcher, ewer, floral vessel or cabinet display piece, while the large relief dogwood blossom provides the primary decorative focus. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered ~ A well preserved example, perhaps exhibiting typical and minor elements relative to age, manner of production and materials.
