AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Set of six porcelain demitasse cups with matching saucers, each cup standing 1.75" tall and measuring 1.75" in diameter to the body, not including the extended handle, with each saucer measuring 4" in diameter. The coordinated set is extensively decorated in black and terracotta-red over a cream-white glazed ground, drawing heavily from ancient Greek vase painting and classical decorative motifs. A continuous Greek key or meander border surrounds the upper edge of each cup and the rim of each saucer, while the bodies are populated with standing classical figures, amphora forms, stylized botanical ornament and repeating black-figure imagery. The saucers carry especially elaborate radial decoration, with alternating figures and vessels arranged around the center. Central lettering reads Apollo ~ Hercules ~ Mercury ~ Bacchus ~ 480 B.C., referencing figures from Greek and Roman mythology and the ancient artistic period that inspired the decoration. Each cup is hand marked to the underside Made in Greece ~ By N. Leontaritis. Surviving N. Leontaritis pottery includes demitasse cups, saucers and other decorative forms carrying closely related ancient Greek figure and pottery inspired designs. The wares were produced in Greece as decorative and functional tableware, particularly for the souvenir and export market during the later 20th century. The diminutive proportions identify these as demitasse or Greek coffee cups, appropriate for espresso, Greek coffee and other small coffee servings. The extensive classical decoration also makes the complete six-place grouping especially suitable for cabinet or tabletop display. CONDITION REPORT > Notably well preserved examples.
