AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > An early 1957 hardcover educational edition of The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, measuring 6.75" wide x 9.25" tall, with the familiar blue illustrated boards featuring the Cat against the bold white title lettering. The copyright page carries the original 1957 Dr. Seuss copyright, Library of Congress Card Number 56-5470, and the important dual-publication statement identifying the Educational Edition published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, with the trade edition published simultaneously by Random House in New York and Canada. This educational issue is distinguished from the familiar Random House trade version by the absence of the For Beginning Readers emblem on the front cover. Houghton Mifflin held the school and educational rights to the title, while Random House handled bookstore trade distribution. The educational edition was issued at the very beginning of the book’s publication history in 1957, when The Cat in the Hat was introduced as a new approach to beginning reading using a limited vocabulary combined with Dr. Seuss’s rhythmic text and highly recognizable illustrations. The book became one of the most important American children’s titles of the 20th century and directly helped launch the Beginner Books concept, changing the style of early-reader publishing through a combination of simple vocabulary, repetition and imaginative illustration. This copy retains the original illustrated boards and full red, blue and black interior artwork throughout. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered. Considerable rubbing, scuffing and edge wear to the exterior boards, with heavier wear at the corners and spine extremities. Interior pages show scattered age and childhood-use evidence, including occasional spotting and marks, while remaining substantially intact as shown
