Pair Antique Majolica-Style Fish & Mascaron Sconces/Ceramic Wall Brackets, circa 1880–1910. Dimensions: Each 11.25 inches high x 9 inches wide x 5.75 inches deep. Striking pair of late 19th/early 20th-century glazed earthenware architectural wall brackets or consoles, modeled in the majolica tradition. Each substantial bracket features an exuberant aquatic composition centered by a large fish or dolphin-like creature amid scrolling waves and deeply molded foliage, terminating below in a wonderfully expressive dark-glazed grotesque or mascaron face. Richly glazed in variegated shades of green, turquoise, ochre, rust, brown and black against a deep brown ground, with molded classical borders and shaped projecting shelves. The dramatic modeling, glossy polychrome glazes and unusual marine imagery give the pair tremendous decorative presence. Designed to be mounted to a wall and used as display brackets for decorative objects, sculpture or pottery. Unmarked. Condition: Overall good antique condition with minor scattered glaze wear, abrasions and minor losses consistent with age and use. One bracket has a noticeable chip/loss at the rear upper corner/edge, as photographed. Additional minor glaze imperfections and manufacturing irregularities are present. No obvious major structural breaks are apparent from the photographs. Auction house considers photographs to be part of the condition report. Incredible Majolica examples!
