Richard Birkett Signed 2002 “Fantasy Clock"

Updated September 23, 2026

Richard Birkett Signed 2002 “Fantasy Clock Found-Object Assemblage Sculpture. Dimensions: 11.5 inches high x 11 inches wide x 4.5 inches deep. Richard Birkett (American), whimsical Fantasy Clock mixed-media assemblage sculpture, signed R. Birkett and dated 2002 on the reverse. Birkett is known for transforming discarded machinery, vintage components and familiar objects into imaginative functional clock sculptures, giving obsolete materials an entirely new life. This wonderfully eccentric example incorporates an array of found objects and mechanical components arranged around a large brushed-metal clock face, including a miniature Pontiac GTO convertible, miniature electric guitar, vintage camera/viewfinder-type housing, recorder reel, electrical and mechanical components, coiled black tubing, hardware and even a small fly. The exposed construction gives the work a playful industrial, postmodern and steampunk character while rewarding close inspection with an abundance of unexpected details. The clock is fitted with a later Japanese quartz movement accessible through the rear compartment. Birketts clocks are recognized as functional sculpture, and comparable works combine salvaged mechanical parts, toys and other found objects into one-of-a-kind assemblages. Condition: Overall good condition with minor scratches, scuffs, oxidation, paint wear, surface grime and other wear to the various found components consistent with the artist's use of repurposed and previously used materials. Some elements may have intentional distressing or pre-existing wear. Clock movement has not been tested for accuracy or continued operation. Auction house considers photographs to be part of the condition report.
