Chinese Cizhou-Style Marbled Stoneware Jar with Applied Handles. Circa early to mid 20th century. Dimensions: 3.75 inches H × 4 inches diameter. Chinese stoneware jar of rounded ovoid form with a slightly flared mouth and four applied lug handles around the shoulder. The vessel is particularly distinctive for its marbled or feather-combed slip decoration, formed from contrasting cream and dark brown-gray clays or slips manipulated into dense, flowing wave and feather patterns across the body. The effect relates to the Chinese ceramic tradition often described as Cizhou-type marbled ware, also known as jiaotai or mixed-clay style decoration. The cream-colored glaze has scattered natural speckling, while the contrasting linear decoration creates an abstract, almost woodgrain or agate-like appearance. The underside is largely unglazed, revealing a gray-brown stoneware body and continuing traces of the marbled decoration. The form and decorative technique are inspired by considerably earlier Chinese wares, particularly Song-period Cizhou and marbled ceramics; however, based on the photographs, I would not attribute this example to the Song Dynasty. Condition: Overall good condition with age-appropriate surface wear, glaze and firing irregularities, scattered discoloration, and minor abrasions. The unglazed underside shows expected wear and firing characteristics. No major chips, cracks, or repairs. Please view all photos for condition.
