Pair of Chinese Celadon-Style Crackle-Glazed Vases with Applied Decoration. Mid 20th century. Dimensions: Left: 9 inches H × approximately 4.5 inches D. Right: 8.75 inches H × approximately 4.5 inches diameter. A decorative pair of Chinese ceramic vases featuring complementary gray-green celadon-style crackle glazes and sculptural forms. The first is of baluster form with a rounded body, raised foot, elongated neck, and flared foliate-form mouth, accented by a pair of applied openwork dragon-form handles at the neck. The second is an angular, faceted bottle-form vase with a hexagonal flared mouth and applied stylized mask-form decoration to opposing sides. Both pieces display finely developed crackling throughout the glaze, recalling traditional Chinese Guan- and Ge-type wares. The faceted vase bears an impressed four-character seal-style mark to the underside. The mark appears to be an apocryphal Chinese reign or workshop-style mark and should not by itself be interpreted as establishing period. Condition: Overall good condition with surface wear and minor glaze and firing irregularities. Extensive crackling/crazing throughout is characteristic of the glaze and decorative effect. Some darkening and discoloration are visible around portions of the applied decoration and foot areas. Please view all photos for condition.
