Simon Bull (British, b. 1958) — Sugar, 2001. A vibrant floral composition by British artist Simon Bull, titled Sugar. The work presents an exuberant, tightly cropped blossom rendered in cool shades of powder blue and white against a rich lavender-purple ground. Bold black contours give the flower a strong graphic presence, while touches of hand-applied silver foil catch the light and introduce a reflective, dimensional quality. The simplified forms, energetic linework, and saturated palette are characteristic of Bull’s colorful contemporary floral imagery. Created in 2001, Sugar is an aquatint on wove paper, individually hand-colored with acrylic inks and pastel and embellished with hand-applied silver foil. It is signed in pencil at the lower right, titled Sugar at the lower left, and numbered 109/350. According to the accompanying Park West Gallery documentation, each example in the edition was individually hand-colored and therefore represents a unique variation. Registration No. A5394.0033. The work is accompanied by a Park West Gallery Certificate of Authenticity and prior appraisal documentation. A January 3, 2013 Park West appraisal assigned a retail replacement value of $1,750, which should not be confused with current secondary-market auction value. Artwork Dimensions: 6 7/8 x 6 7/8 inches. Frame Dimensions: 30 x 26 inches. Condition: Very good overall condition. The artwork presents with strong, vibrant color, and the silver-foil embellishments appear well preserved. No significant visible tears, staining, losses, or other major condition issues are apparent in the areas visible through the framing. Professionally matted and presented in a substantial silver-tone frame with black matting; the frame is also in very good overall condition with only minor signs of handling or age.
