Rare Antique French Chenille Embroidered Landscape Picture. Age: Late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1920. Dimensions: Sight: 9.5 H x 12.5 W inches. Frame: 13 H x 16.5 W inches Charming antique French chenille embroidered landscape picture depicting a rustic countryside scene with a thatched cottage, fenced lane, mature trees, and distant rural structures beneath a softly clouded sky. Executed in finely worked chenille and wool embroidery, the composition achieves a painterly effect through subtle tonal shading and intricate stitchwork, characteristic of decorative textile pictures produced in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The pastoral subject reflects the enduring popularity of romantic rural imagery in French decorative arts, while the richly textured chenille fibers create depth and atmospheric softness. The work is housed in its period stained pine frame with mitered corners, complementing the warm palette of the embroidery. A paper label on the reverse marked "Made in France" further supports its French origin. Decorative textile pictures of this type were commonly displayed in parlors and country homes and remain sought after today for their nostalgic charm, handcrafted quality, and suitability for traditional, cottage, and French provincial interiors. Condition: Very good viewing condition. Presented behind glass in a period wood frame. The embroidery exhibits expected age-related fading, discoloration, and accumulated dust beneath the glazing. Minor wear, abrasions, and losses to fibers may be present. Frame with scattered scratches, surface wear, and age-related handling marks. Backing paper replaced or reinforced at a later date. This auction house considers the photographs to be the condition report. Provenance: From the estate of a distinguished Georgia physician, whose collection of fine art, antiques, jewelry, and decorative objects was carefully assembled over a period of decades.
