Russian Embossed Silvered Metal Icon of Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. Late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1880–1910. Dimensions: 9.5 H x 9 W x 1 D inches. Frame: Finely executed Russian Orthodox embossed silvered metal icon depicting the celebrated Three Holy Hierarchs: Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint John Chrysostom. Revered collectively in Eastern Christianity as the foremost theologians and defenders of Orthodox doctrine, the saints are shown standing frontally, vested in richly ornamented episcopal robes and holding Gospel books and scrolls symbolic of their teachings. The composition is rendered in high-relief repoussé metalwork with remarkable attention to detail, including elaborate foliate ornament, decorative borders, and Cyrillic inscriptions identifying the saints. The intricate treatment of the vestments and halos reflects the craftsmanship associated with Russian devotional metalwork produced during the late Imperial period. The icon is presented within a later painted and distressed wooden frame with a red textile-covered mount, creating an attractive display while preserving the historic devotional plaque at its center. Icons of the Three Holy Hierarchs were especially popular in Russia and throughout the Orthodox world, serving as symbols of ecclesiastical unity, theological wisdom, and spiritual guidance. The present example combines strong decorative appeal with traditional religious iconography, making it suitable for both collectors of Russian icons and decorative arts enthusiasts. Condition: Silvered metal plaque with expected wear, oxidation, minor surface abrasions, and areas of rubbing consistent with age and devotional handling. Later frame and textile surround with light wear, scattered surface marks, and age-related distress. No attempt has been made to remove tarnish or patina. This auction house considers the photographs to be the condition report. Provenance: From the estate of a distinguished Georgia physician, whose collection of fine art, antiques, jewelry, and decorative objects was carefully assembled over a period of decades.
