Marie-Guillaume-Charles Leroux (French, 1814–1895)..Rocky Coast with Breaking Surf, dated Paris, 1892. Oil on canvas. Canvas: 12 x 22 in. Frame: 19 x 29 in. A finely executed coastal seascape by French Barbizon painter Marie-Guillaume-Charles Leroux, signed and dated Paris 1892 lower right. The composition depicts waves crashing against a rocky shoreline beneath a luminous, cloud-filled sky, the artist employing vigorous impasto and animated brushwork to capture the movement of the surf and atmospheric effects of light. Leroux, a pupil of Corot and associated with the Barbizon tradition, was particularly admired for his dramatic marine subjects and naturalistic landscapes. The restrained palette, textured surface, and evocative treatment of sea and sky exemplify the artist's mature style during the final years of his career. Housed in a period giltwood frame. Condition: Relined canvas. Extensive but stable age craquelure visible throughout, particularly in the sky. Surface appears to have an older varnish with some uneven gloss. No obvious punctures, tears, or active paint loss observed from the photographs. Minor frame wear, losses, and rubbing to gilt decoration consistent with age. Presents well overall and displays strongly. Provenance: From the estate of a distinguished Georgia physician, whose collection of fine art, antiques, jewelry, and decorative objects was carefully assembled over a period of decades. Expect to pay $4000 and up in a gallery for this treasure!
