C. Soutter Impressionist Landscape Oil on Canvas

Updated September 19, 2026

Large oil on canvas landscape painting, signed C. Soutter or similar in the lower right corner, depicting an expansive sunlit meadow bordered by mature trees and opening toward softly rendered distant hills beneath a broad atmospheric blue sky filled with drifting clouds. The artist uses a richly textured Impressionist approach with layered brushwork and areas of pronounced impasto, particularly through the golden foreground grasses, shrubs, and foliage, creating a strong sense of depth, movement, and changing light across the landscape. Warm ochre, olive, and golden tones dominate the field, while cooler blue and gray hues recede into the distant hills and sky, producing a balanced and luminous composition. The clustered trees at right form a strong vertical focal point against the open countryside, while the broad sweep of illuminated grasses gives the scene a spacious pastoral quality. Presented in a substantial ornate gilt-toned frame with layered foliate and scroll decoration. The frame has some scuffs and scratches consistent with age and use. Sight measures 35.75" x 35.75". Frame measures 43.75" x 43.75".
