He was among the pioneering Black players who followed Jackie Robinson in integrating Major League Baseball and quickly proved himself at the game's highest level. Irvin became a cornerstone of the Giants, earning an All Star selection in 1952, leading the National League with 121 RBI in 1951, and finishing third in that season's MVP voting while helping New York capture the National League pennant. He later played an important role on the 1954 World Series champion Giants, a club remembered for Willie Mays' legendary "The Catch." Irvin concluded his Major League career with the Chicago Cubs in 1956, but his MLB statistics represent only a portion of a distinguished professional career whose prime years were spent in the Negro Leagues and interrupted by military service during World War II. Recognizing the full scope of his accomplishments and historical importance, Irvin was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973 through the Negro Leagues Committee, becoming one of the earliest Negro League legends enshrined in Cooperstown. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 96, permanently limiting the supply of authentic material signed during his lifetime.
