Nicknamed "The Mechanical Man" for his extraordinary consistency and quiet, businesslike approach to the game, Gehringer spent his entire 19 season Major League career with the Detroit Tigers from 1924 through 1942, compiling 2,839 hits, 574 doubles, 184 home runs, 1,427 RBI, 1,775 runs scored and a .320 lifetime batting average. He was selected to the first six Major League All Star Games from 1933 through 1938, captured the 1937 American League MVP Award after leading the league with a spectacular .371 batting average, and helped Detroit win consecutive American League pennants in 1934 and 1935. The latter season culminated with the Tigers defeating the Chicago Cubs to capture the 1935 World Series championship, the first in franchise history. One of the premier offensive second basemen of his era, Gehringer batted .300 or better in 13 seasons and led the American League in hits twice, runs twice and doubles twice during his remarkable career. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1949, cementing his place among Detroit's greatest sporting legends. Gehringer passed away in 1993 at the age of 89, permanently limiting the supply of authentic material signed during his lifetime.
