Presentation: Two works mounted together under glass with pale green matting and gilt inner slips. An appealing pair of early Canadian landscape studies by Mary Evelyn Wrinch, comprising two freely executed pencil drawings depicting wooded Ontario-type landscapes. The first presents a winding roadway or path passing through a heavily treed landscape, rendered with strong simplified contours. The companion drawing depicts a tranquil lake surrounded by evergreens beneath an expressive cloud-filled sky, with reflections lightly indicated across the water. Both demonstrate Wrinch's ability to reduce the Canadian landscape to strong rhythmic outlines and simplified masses—qualities that also translated effectively into her important colour block prints. Artist Biography Mary Evelyn Wrinch was an important early Canadian modernist painter and printmaker and a member of both the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA) and Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (ARCA). She worked across painting, drawing and printmaking and is particularly recognized today for her highly distinctive colour block prints and Canadian landscape subjects. Her market encompasses oils, works on paper and original prints.
