Artist: Gary Peter Slipper, RCA (1934–2019) Medium: Mixed media works on paper, including ink drawings and original graphic works Date: 1958–1963 Number of Works: Five Overall Frame: Approx. 25.5 × 17 in. Slipper/63 – abstract/surrealist ink drawing, approx. 3.5 × 4.5 in. “Stamp” – miniature graphic work, numbered 7/100, approx. 2 × 3 in., inscribed “Slipper”La Niña del Estanque – original graphic work with blue hand-colouring, inscribed “9/A. No. 2 ‘La Niña del Estanque’,” signed “G. Sas,” dated 1958, approx. 10 × 8 in. Bull composition – mixed-media/graphic work, approx. 3 × 4 in., inscribed “Slipper” Surrealist landscape/figure composition – ink drawing, approx. 3.5 × 4.5 in., signed/inscribed “Slipper/63” An intriguing framed assemblage of five small works associated with Gary Peter Slipper, dating principally from the early 1960s. The compositions display the imaginative, dreamlike imagery that became characteristic of Slipper's work: fantastical organic forms, stylized figures, animals and surreal landscapes. Artist Biography Gary Peter Slipper was born in Calgary in 1934 and became known for highly imaginative figurative and Surrealist-inspired painting and drawing. His studies included the Banff School of Fine Arts, Vancouver School of Art, American Academy of Art in Chicago and further study in Madrid and Florence. His subjects frequently incorporated fantasy, mythology, dreams and the human figure. He lived in Hamilton from 1960–65 before moving to Toronto and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1977. Slipper exhibited extensively beginning in the late 1950s and participated in exhibitions at institutions including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and National Gallery of Canada. His work entered numerous Canadian public collections.
