Artist: Gerald William Scott (Canadian, 1926–2003) Title: Portrait of a Man (descriptive title) Medium: Oil on board Sight: Approx. 23.5 × 17 in. Framed: Approx. 27 × 21 in. Verso: Extensive working paint marks and an original newspaper article concerning Gerald Scott and his portrait practice. A striking expressionist portrait attributed to Canadian painter Gerald William Scott, depicting a bearded man in three-quarter view. The sitter is constructed through vigorous, loosely applied passages of pink, violet, turquoise, blue, green, ochre and burgundy against a warm ochre-pink ground. Artist Biography Gerald William Scott (1926–2003) was a Canadian painter particularly associated with portraiture and the Toronto art scene. His place within Toronto's important postwar avant-garde is well documented: the Art Gallery of Hamilton identifies Scott as one of five artists—alongside Graham Coughtry, William Ronald, Robert Varvarande and Michael Snow—who inaugurated the Greenwich Gallery in February 1956. The gallery subsequently became the influential Isaacs Gallery. Scott is also represented in the University of Toronto's Hart House Collection. His commissioned 1977 oil portrait of Dr. Jean Lengellé hangs among the institution's Great Hall portraits. The newspaper attached to this painting is valuable biographical documentation in its own right. It describes Scott as an established portrait painter and discusses a second portrait commissioned by Baroness Mercedes de Guinsburg, who had travelled to Toronto specifically to sit for him.
