A particularly strong early screenprint by noted Canadian printmaker Ann McCall, presenting a highly stylized winter landscape viewed through a large modern window. Horizontal Venetian blinds dominate the upper portion of the composition, while the view beyond is reduced to subtle bands of blue, grey and white suggesting snow, water and a distant horizon. A repeating patterned interior element along the bottom provides a contrasting decorative rhythm. The restrained palette and geometric division between interior and exterior give the work a distinctly late-1970s modernist character. Artist Biography Ann McCall was born in Toronto in 1941 and became an important Canadian printmaker. She received a BA in Art History from McGill University in 1964, subsequently studied art at the University of Pittsburgh, and completed her BFA in printmaking at Concordia University in Montreal. She established her Montreal studio during the 1970s and has worked extensively in screenprinting, lithography, collagraph and mixed media. The Dunlop Art Gallery notes that her work is held in numerous public, corporate and private collections. McCall has worked professionally as a printmaker since 1975 and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in the early 1980s. Her work frequently explores landscape, natural phenomena and especially the effects of light.
