Artist: Orval Clinton Madden (O.C. Madden), Canadian, 1892–1971 Title: Downsview Area North of Sheppard Medium: Oil on board Sight: 15.5 × 19.5 in. Framed: 20.5 × 24.5 in. Signature: Signed “O.C. MADDEN” lower left Verso: Inscribed “DOWNSVIEW AREA NORTH OF SHEPPARD / O.C. MADDEN” A particularly attractive Toronto-area rural landscape by Canadian artist Orval Clinton Madden, depicting the Downsview area north of Sheppard Avenue before the extensive suburban development that transformed this part of Toronto. The clearly identified Downsview/Sheppard location gives this painting additional historical and local interest as a record of Toronto's former agricultural landscape. Artist Biography Orval Clinton Madden (1892–1971) was a Canadian artist best known for landscape painting. His subjects included rural Ontario, waterways, villages and other distinctly Canadian locations. Auction records consistently identify him as a Canadian landscape painter, and documented works include South of Eganville, At Mindemoya Lake, Manitoulin Island, Tug Boat, St. Lawrence River, Near Cormac, Ont. and Sawyer-Stoll Mill, Massanoga. Madden worked principally in oil, frequently painting on canvas board or artist's board. His landscapes reveal an interest in recording recognizable Canadian places while retaining an expressive, painterly handling of trees, skies, water and rural architecture. His work continues to appear in the Canadian secondary market.
