Casson” in the lower margin A framed colour reproduction of one of A.J. Casson's most recognizable Canadian landscapes, White Pine. The composition depicts a windswept white pine rising from the rocky Canadian Shield, overlooking a lake and distant dark hills beneath a dramatic cloud-filled sky. The printed caption identifies the source painting as A.J. Casson, White Pine, c.1957, oil on canvas, 76 x 101.3 cm. The original painting is held by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, where it entered the collection as a gift of founders Robert and Signe McMichael in 1966. Artist Biography Alfred Joseph Casson (1898–1992) was a major Canadian landscape painter, designer and printmaker and the youngest member of the Group of Seven. Casson's highly organized compositions, distinctive treatment of Ontario villages and northern landscapes, and exceptional sense of design established him as one of the most recognizable Canadian artists of the twentieth century. Casson also had an important connection to printmaking and reproduction through his long career with Sampson-Matthews Limited, where he served as art director and was closely involved with the firm's celebrated Canadian silkscreen projects. White Pine was among the Casson compositions reproduced through Sampson-Matthews.
