Artist: Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton, RCA, OSA (Canadian, 1894–1954) Title: Untitled Landscape Medium: Watercolour and gouache on paper Sight Size: Approx. 4.5" x 10" Framed Size: Approx. 18" x 21.5" Signature: Signed “PANTON” lower left Presentation: Matted under glass in a substantial carved and gilt-decorated frame. An appealing original landscape by important Canadian painter and educator Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton, presenting an expansive panoramic view across a wooded valley toward distant hills and waterways. Executed in a restrained palette of olive green, brown, grey, lavender and pale blue, the work demonstrates Panton's talent for simplifying the Canadian landscape into broad masses of colour and rhythmic forms. Tall foreground trees form a strong vertical screen against the atmospheric distance, while successive bands of land, water and hills give the small composition an impressive sense of depth. Artist Biography Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton (1894–1954) was born in Egremont, Cheshire, England and immigrated to Canada in 1911. Following service during the First World War, he studied at the Ontario College of Art and Central Technical School in Toronto. He subsequently worked as a designer at the prominent Toronto firm Rous and Mann, where his professional circle included figures such as A.J. Casson. Panton became an influential Canadian art educator. He taught at Central Technical School and Western Technical School, became art director at Northern Vocational School, and ultimately served as principal of the Ontario College of Art from 1951 until his death in 1954. He was a founding member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, a member and former president of the Ontario Society of Artists, and became a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1943. His work evolved from representational Canadian landscape painting toward increasingly simplified and abstracted interpretations of nature. His work is represented in important Canadian public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario and Winnipeg Art Gallery.
