Artist: Ilio Giannaccini (Italian, 1897–1968) Title: Venezia Medium: Oil on tile Sight Size: Approx. 5.5" x 5.5" Framed Size: Approx. 8.5" x 8.5" Inscription: Verso inscribed “VENEZIA / By I. Giannaccini” Subject: Venetian canal scene Period: Mid-20th century Executed with loose, economical brushwork, the composition uses a restrained palette of ochre, terracotta, olive, grey and black. The dark boats and their reflections create a strong foreground counterpoint to the sunlit architecture beyond. The intimate scale and spontaneous handling give the work the character of a travel or plein-air study. Artist Biography Ilio Giannaccini was born in Rome in 1897 and died there in 1968. Italian auction-house records document him working in oils and watercolours, with subjects including Italian landscapes, coastal scenes, figures and architectural views. Casa d’Aste Arcadia records works including Terrazza a Capri, Piazza San Pietro, Marina con tempio and an early 1919 watercolour executed in Tripoli.
