Two Southern folk art face jugs. The left jug by Dale Costner of Vale, North Carolina features a short, stout form with a deep brown glossy glaze, wide white clay eyes, and a hand-modeled ceramic cigar or pipe held between white teeth. An incised beard adds texture to the lower face, and an inscription on the back that reads, "god help me quit…cough cough cough." The right jug by Marvin Bailey has a taller teardrop-shaped form with a dark glossy tobacco-spit glaze, bulging white and blue eyes, dramatic incised eyebrows, and a wide grin.
