1986-D Statue of Liberty Half in 1985 FDI Cover

A Statue of Liberty commemorative half dollar sealed into the window of a first day cover, in a red padded case with a certificate. First, the coin is clearly dated 1986, not 1985. The only 1985 here is the First Day of Issue postmark, DENVER CO OCT 18 1985, which marks the first day of striking, not the coin's date. A D mint mark sits on the obverse above the date. Second, the packaging is a Postal Commemorative Society product, a private company, not the United States Mint. On metal we will not guess: the packaging never uses the word clad and never uses the word silver, and the coin is sealed inside the paper cover and cannot be removed without destroying it, so the edge can never be checked and the metal cannot be confirmed. The coin is uncirculated with sharp detail and no rim dings. The back of the cover shows several diffuse tan and gray stains. The 1986 Liberty program funded the restoration of the statue and Ellis Island. Estimated Value: $10 to $20. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot.
