Four 90 percent silver Washington quarters struck before the 1965 switch to clad. The close-ups show the dates plainly: 1942, 1944, 1946 and 1948. The 1942 carries an S and the 1944 a D, both below the wreath bow on the reverse. On the 1946 and 1948 the mint mark position is buried under crust and no letter can be read, so no mint is claimed for either. The 1942 is the best of the group, with strong detail under heavy orange and russet toning. The 1944-D shows moderate wear and a small dark blob on the reverse. The other two are damaged: the 1946 has green verdigris and brown crust on both faces that has eaten into the lettering, and the 1948 reverse is nearly obliterated by orange-brown and green encrustation. That is environmental corrosion, not toning. The four hold $1.00 face in 90 percent silver, roughly $47 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal moves, so check spot before you bid. Silver quarters vanished from circulation fast after 1965 as the public pulled them out. Estimated Value: $48 to $65. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot.
