Two Jefferson nickels, and only one is silver. The 1944 shows a large P above the Monticello dome, the wartime placement, so it is a 1944-P war nickel: 56 percent copper, 35 percent silver, 9 percent manganese. The Mint pulled nickel out of the coin for armor plate and put a big mint mark over the dome so the silver pieces could be sorted out later. It holds about 0.0563 troy ounce of pure silver, roughly $3.70 at prices near $66 per ounce, and metal moves, so check spot before you bid. Condition: that 1944-P is heavily circulated and problem surfaced, dull brown gray with worn hair and soft pillars, and its reverse carries bright green and blue green crusty verdigris along the roofline and right side, with brown stains and green flecks on the obverse. The 1940 is the nicer coin, lightly circulated with sharp hair detail and light golden gray tone. Its reverse carries a mint mark right of Monticello; that letter is small and soft and reads best as an S. A 1940 nickel holds no silver. Estimated Value: $5 to $9. Sold as-is.
