Two 90 percent silver Mercury dimes, the winged head design Adolph Weinman cut in 1916 and the Mint used through 1945. The 1917 carries a clear S mint mark on the reverse at the base of the fasces, a San Francisco strike. On the 1926 that same position is in focus and empty, so it reads as a Philadelphia coin. Both are honestly circulated. The 1917 shows moderate to heavy wear with a flat head and smeared wing feathers, though the fasces rods still stand out, in light gray silver with darker gray in the recesses and a few small nicks. The 1926 keeps a little more hair and wing detail but carries much darker charcoal and brown toning with scattered dark spots, heaviest on the reverse. Neither shows luster, corrosion or cleaning brightness. The pair holds about 0.145 troy ounce of pure silver, roughly $9.50 at recent prices near $66 per ounce, and metal moves, so check spot before you bid. The head is Liberty in the cap of free thought, not the god Mercury, but the nickname stuck. Estimated Value: $10 to $16. Sold as-is. Photos are the most accurate description of this lot.
