An advertising vesta case manufactured by Ajax Ltd for the Glasgow-based brewers and distillers G. & J. Maclachlan. The piece is constructed with a plated metal frame featuring inset celluloid panels to both sides. The obverse panel depicts a coloured horse racing scene with three jockeys, accompanied by the text The World's Record-Five Successive Wins and a small illustration of a whisky bottle. The reverse panel contains detailed promotional text for G. & J. Maclachlan, Brewers, Distillers, Wine & Spirit Merchants, & Exporters, specifying head offices at Castle Chambers Glasgow and agents in South Africa, India, and Australia. Small print at the base of the reverse panel reads AJAX LTD. PHILPOT LANE, LONDON. MADE IN U.S.A. The case is designed with a hinged top and a serrated match striker plate on the bottom edge. Dimensions: H approx. 5.1 cm x W approx. 3.8 cm (measured against a ruler). Condition: The case shows significant wear and loss to the metal plating, particularly at the edges and corners. The celluloid panels exhibit minor surface scratching and slight age-related discoloration. The hinge mechanism remains functional and the striker plate shows signs of use.
