A framed needlework sampler worked in cross-stitch using coloured cotton threads on an off-white woven fabric support. The design features a four-line rhyme at the centre, stitched in brown thread: "Make new friends, / But keep the old; / The new are silver / The old are gold." Situated above the text are two female figures depicted in nineteenth-century style dress—one in a blue checkered gown and the other in a pink patterned gown—set amongst small yellow butterfly motifs. A decorative border of green vines and pink floral accents surrounds the central imagery and text. The artwork is presented in a dark-stained wood frame with a visible grain. The verso is secured with a corrugated cardboard backing and fitted with a wire hanging mechanism. Dimensions (measured from tape, only inches shown): approx. H 39 cm x W 31.5 cm. Condition: The sampler is in stable condition with minor age-related toning to the fabric support. The wooden frame shows light surface wear and minor scuffing consistent with age.
