A 1917 lithographic motto print by P.F. Volland & Co. of Chicago, produced on a textured support designed to simulate the appearance of a needlework sampler. The composition features a central four-line poem: True Friendship is a Gordian Knot / Which angel hands have tied; / By Heavenly skill its texture wrought / Who shall its folds divide? The verse is surrounded by traditional sampler motifs including topiary trees, a central yellow butterfly, a young boy and girl, and two couples in eighteenth-century style dress situated within a garden landscape. The scene is framed by a geometric floral border in red, blue, and green tones. The work is inscribed at the lower left: © 1917, P.F. VOLLAND & CO. CHICAGO XXXXM 639M, and bears the artist's initials MMW at the lower right. The piece is held in a simple wooden frame with a thin red inner fillet and a cardboard backing stamped with the number 1325. Dimensions (approx. measured against a ruler, inches shown): H 34.9 cm x W 25.4 cm. Condition: The print is in good condition with no visible tears or fading. The wooden frame shows minor surface wear consistent with age. There is evidence of minor foxing on the cardboard backing on the verso.
