A late nineteenth-century Etruscan Majolica earthenware syrup pitcher by the American manufacturer Griffen, Smith and Hill. The vessel is designed in a tapering hexagonal form, relief-moulded with panels featuring upright green leaves. These motifs are set against alternating backgrounds of pink stippling and blue basketweave or trellis patterns. The handle is realistically modelled as a yellow bamboo stalk with textured nodes. The jug is fitted with a hinged pewter lid featuring a domed profile, a flared thumbpiece, and a pointed finial. The underside of the base features an impressed circular manufacturer mark with the words ETRUSCAN MAJOLICA surrounding a central monogram of the intertwined letters GSH. The pattern or model number 222 is impressed below the mark. Condition: The jug exhibits overall fine crazing to the glaze, consistent with Victorian majolica. There is minor surface soiling and darkening in the recessed areas of the relief moulding and around the handle joins. The pewter lid shows an aged patina and some surface oxidation. The piece is free of visible chips, cracks, or signs of restoration.
