This is a WWII German military backpack food and beverage transport canister (Essensträger / Suppenkanne) weighing 5,056 grams (11.15 lbs). Measuring 15.5 in H x 13.5 in W x 8.5 in D (39.4 cm H x 34.3 cm W x 21.6 cm D), the steel container is crisp-stamped on top of the lid with the ordnance code "hfw 43" (1943).Designed for delivering hot soups, meals, or coffee from field kitchens (Gulaschkanone) to troops in front-line positions, the canister features a pressure-sealed hinged lid with wing-nut clamps, a rubber gasket, side grab handles, a red food-safe interior enamel coating, and two original leather shoulder backpack harness straps attached via D-rings and cordage. The canister displays field wear with minor exterior dents, scuffing, and edge paint loss. The inner bottom displays moderate rust pitting and surface oxidation, while the base underside exhibits rust spotting along the rim seam. The leather backpack straps show age drying, creasing, and surface cracking, with heavy fraying along one lower strap end. The right strap is broken at the bottom near the connection point.
