ca. 1870-1880; Fine Lancaster Co. paint decorated sewing chest with construction attributed to Joseph Lehn and paint decoration attributed to Lehn's associate William Carl Heilig (1833-1897) an Ephrata Chair maker. Many pieces of attributed Lehnware has influence of both artisans. This fine hinged lid sewing chest has raised panel lid, black painted "turnip-turned" feet, brown painted ground and applied decal decorations on three sides and lid within three color (yellow-red-white) pinstriped panels. The lid is hinged on brass butt hinges with underside having central decal with two separate pinstripe panels and a fully red painted interior with multi-compartment lift-out tray; 11 1/4" x 7 1/4" x 6 1/2"H; [Provenance: Purchased at Horst Auction Center 2008; ex-Homer Weaver collection], Condition: All original painted surface intact, partial loss noted to applied decals.
