Wonderful, profusely decorated 8-gallon stoneware crock. Samuel Booker crocks are more difficult to find than Bayless McCarthy and this is an exciting find. Attributed to the pottery of James Hamilton from Greensboro, Pa (see previous lot for a crock decorated by the same hand) this crock features large, bold fuchsia with floral vining, wide stripes, a freehand "8" and 1" high stenciled letters. Ca. 1865-1870. 18 1/2"H Hairline starting 4" in the bottom, arcing 7" up the right side of the crock. A 6" line to the left of the "L" in Louisville, ending in a "Y" with the bottom branch extending 3". 1" chip on bottom. Some heat distortion to the salt glaze at the bottom on either side of the "8" with some loss to the glaze. A grease line through the "Y" in KY shows a line on the inside of the jar allowing the grease to leech through.
