Wilhelm Schimmel (?-1890) turned up in the Cumberland Valley area around Carlisle sometime after the Civil War. A heavy drinker, he would travel from tavern to tavern with his penknife and carved pine figures in exchange for money or free whiskey. Little did he know that, long after his death of stomach cancer in 1890, he would become a well-respected folk artist and his carvings, including this parrot, would be sought after by collectors who are charmed by the carving and his exuberant paint decoration. This particular parrot was in the collection of Elroy and Helene Master and was sold by Pook and Pook at their June 19th/20th sale in 2009. 6 1/2"H Very good.
