Collection of five vintage hand bells in a variety of traditional forms, constructed of brass, cast metal and cast iron with turned wooden and figural handles. Several resemble classic school, teacher or dinner bells, a form commonly made with brass or cast-metal bodies, wooden handles and iron clappers. The standout example is the black cast iron bell with a gentleman figural handle and cast iron clapper. Figural cast-iron hand bells depicting period gentlemen and similar characters are known collectible forms. The remaining four bells have turned wooden handles paired with brass or other cast-metal bell bodies, ranging from simple utilitarian designs to more substantial stepped and flared forms. The tallest measures approximately 9" tall and has the most modern appearance, with a smooth dark brass-tone body and large turned wood handle. The smallest measures approximately 5.5" tall. Various examples show patina, oxidation, scratches and other wear consistent with age and use. See photos for details.
