French Model 1896 cavalry officer's sword dating to the early World War I period, with blade dated 1914. This elegant example features a straight, fullered steel blade with visible engraved script along the spine reading "Sabre d'Officier de Cavalerie Mle 1896" and "Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Chatellerault", indicating production at the French state arsenal. The hilt is richly detailed in gilt brass with flowing Art Nouveau style decoration, including a pierced guard and a pommel adorned with a stylized face motif. The grip is finished in black with twisted wire wrap, showing classic officer grade construction and design. The sword is accompanied by its original metal scabbard. Condition shows age appropriate wear, including surface marks, light oxidation, and patina to both blade and scabbard, with some wear to the finish on the hilt and grip. The blade remains straight and presents well overall, with legible markings. A fine example of a French cavalry officer's sword from the opening year of World War I, appealing to collectors of militaria and edged weapons. Blade 35", overall 41"
